It’s difficult to know quite where to start, when faced writing a simple biography about Anne Marie Almedal.

With a career spanning over 30 years, as a Norwegian vocalist/singer-songwriter, she’s been sometimes described as a “shoegaze chanteuse”, “folk-pop femme fatale”, “indie songbird”, “female Nick Drake”, and almost every possible term deemed appropriate by bedazzled music journalists, or her loyal following of besotted fans.

“her voice has all the innate beauty of a Mary Hopkins or a Sandy Denny and the breathless presentation of Kate Bush” (Music-News.com)

“Anne Marie Almedal’s voice is diaphanous and translucent, an astonishing instrument and she knows exactly how to use it” (The Afterword)

“With effortless grace and precision, Anne Marie’s vocal delivery is transportive and enveloping, conveying a life-affirming message of love, and the nostalgic innocence of a childlike heart” (Post-Punk.com)

Anne Marie Almedal’s career began back in Kristiansand, southern Norway fronting the Norwegian dream-pop band Velvet Belly, who released a handful of other-wordly albums from 1992-2003 (BMG/RCA). The band reached out far and wide, from across the North Sea, and yet somehow never quite managed to achieve the mainstream success they fully deserved.

As well as being a much sought-after featured guest vocalist in a spotless catalogue of releases, as well as a number of film & TV soundtracks, it wasn’t until 2007 that Anne Marie Almedal began her flourishing solo career.

Anne Marie Almedal has so far released five solo albums

“The Siren and The Sage” (2007), “Blue Sky Blue” (2010), “Memory Lane” (2012), “Lightshadow” (2018), and most recently, “We Dance Alone” (2022).

Over the years, her albums, songs and live performances have wowed and fluttered in a widescreen panorama of sound and style; from intimate folk-pop to sensual folktronica, euphoric indie-pop to daring dream-pop. All, with her unique vocals, heartfelt lyrics and presence taking centre stage.

Anne Marie Almedal is perhaps best-known in Norway for her theme song to the iconic “Himmelblå” TV series, which, still to this day, remains one of the most-viewed Norwegian TV dramas ever and a timeless folk-pop evergreen on Norwegian radio.

Anne Marie’s emotive, self-penned songs, as well as her stunning cover versions, have also appeared in a vast number of film & TV soundtrack placements around the world. This has allowed her music, and back catalogue to be continually discovered by wider audiences, allured by the mystery of this siren’s song.

As a featured guest vocalist, Anne Marie Almedal has also appeared on a wide range of other fine artist releases and collaborations, in the echelons of avant-pop, folk, jazz, and electronica.

Over the years, Anne Marie has seldomly performed live as a solo artist, more focused on her love affair with the microphone, studio adventures, and family life; a somewhat familiar trait with many of the artists she has been inspired by, and often alluded to; Kate Bush, Talk Talk, Nick Drake, Tracey Thorn (amongst others). However, she has, played a number of select gigs and festivals in and around Norway, The UK, and occasional dates in Europe; whenever inclined to promote a new release.

Her discography (see below) should hopefully provide further information to both fans, aspiring and casual listeners, as well as providing a more detailed insight into the ‘who’s who’ of wonderful musicians, engineers, programmers, friends and collaborations Anne Marie has encountered along the way.

All of Anne Marie Almedal’s solo albums have been produced by Nicholas Sillitoe, her partner and champion. All priority releases for +47.

Live

Anne Marie Almedal Live.jpg

Lightshadow Live.jpg

As a solo artist, Anne Marie Almedal has only performed a rare number of exclusive live events in both Norway, and abroad.

These also include select one-off gigs, release parties, festivals, live TV & radio shows, etc. when inclined to promote her various album releases, in fairly intimate live performances.

Notable dates/events/venues (in Norway) include; Hove Festival (Arendal), Kilden (Kristiansand), Salt (Oslo), Sentrum Scene (Oslo), Tou Scene (Stavanger), NRK TV & radio, TV2, as well as a short tour in Norway, with the band "Minor Majority", in 2019.

Outside of Norway, she has performed a small selection of live dates when doing various international promotional activities, for different album releases. These include gigs at the 100 Club (London), Royal Norwegian Embassy (London), Popkomm (Berlin), Clärchens Ballhaus (Berlin), and Monjibou Festspiele (Berlin).

Instead of the stressful tour/promo circuit, Anne Marie has thankfully made a handful of live videos and concert films; notably "Anne Marie Almedal - Live At Aladdin" (Directed by Fred Arne Wergeland), and two short films, "Anne Marie Almedal - Lightshadow Live Sessions Vol.1" & "Lightshadow Live Sessions Vol.2" (Directed by Iain Forbes).

Prior to her solo career, Anne Marie Almedal did of course perform live as front-person/vocalist for "Velvet Belly" (both in Norway and abroad), as well as other select dates with projects like "AM & The UV", etc.

Any news regarding eventual future live gigs/appearances will no doubt be announced on Anne Marie Almedal's social media updates.
